BRIEF PROFILE OF THE GOVT GENERAL ZORAWAR SINGH MEMORIAL DEGREE COLLEGE, REASI


The Govt. Degree college Reasi was established in the year 2003 and the classwork started in the mid session on 16-12-2003 vide Govt, order no .105 HE of 2001 dated 13-03-02 . The foundation stone of college was laid by Dr. Farooq Abdullah , the then Hon'ble chief minister of J&k state on 6th June ,2002. In order to make the college functional as many as 19 students migrated in the mid of the session from the Govt college for women , Prade ,Jammu ,Govt. M.A.M Jammu ,Govt degree college for boys Udhampur and Govt.


Degree college for women Udhampur. Govt. Degree College, Reasi was inaugurated by then Chief Minister of J&K state , Jenab Mufti Mohamad Sayed on 28th of September, 2003 in the presence of Sh . Mangat Ram Sharma , Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister of J&k state, Sh Harsh Dev Singh , Hon'ble Minister of Education , Sh Madan Lai Sharma, Hon'ble Minister for R&B, Sh Abdul Rehman Veeri ,M.O.S for PHE. The college is affiliated to University of Jammu. The college provides instructions in the discipline of Arts, Science and Commerce .The college building consists of Administrative block. Arts block, Science block.

LOCATION OF THE COLLEGE

The college is located at village Mari, in the foothills of Shivaliks at a distance of 75kms from Jammu and 3 kms from Reasi .situated at the Eastern bank of river Chenab. It is the most ideal place for an Educational Institution, free from ding-dong of the town life. This college is privileged for being located in the vicinity of a number of shrines and tourist spots. Prominent among these are Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in which students and the staff members are constantly seeking the blessings of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi. Other religious spots of popular repute include shrine of Baba Jitto at Aghar, a revolutionary folk hero who is still remembered and reverred for his campaign against the fellow farmers, temple of Baba Dhansar , an enchanting spot in the spring of cool crystal Clearwater, gushing out of the mountain side and a small cave inside of the which is naturally formed Shivling, bathing in the droplets of water falling upon it. The Gurudawara of Dera Baba Banda who was Guru Govind Singh's favourite “ Saint Soldier”; Sihard Baba famous for its magnificent and nearly 400 ft high cascading waterfall and the ancient pagan temple Shiv Khori ,cave shrine of lord Shiva which houses a 4 feet high Svaymbhur Lingum. Salal Dam and lake of river Chenab , the lake covers a length of about 20 kms.The Bhimgarh fort,built by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1817 the most prominent land mark of Reasi town and the hilltop temple of Maha Kali.
The College has acquired 108.15 Kanals of land which is sufficient for further expansion . Reasi Subdivision happens to be a hilly belt and GDC Reasi, caters to the needs of the students belonging to the most deprived and backward population of the state. Students come from Pouni , Bharakh, Mahore ,Arnas ,Gool ,Gulabgarh , Katra and Bhumag belt .Apart from this, the college is catering to the students from outside the state belonging to the families, working in NHPC and Konkan railways. This college is an important feeding institution for the SMVDU Katra.
This college has an experienced and dedicated teaching faculty that leaves no stone unturned to impart the education among the students to the best of their abilities. One unit of NSS volunteers is functioning under the able guidance NSS P.O of the college under the supervision of N.S.S Co-coordinator of the University of Jammu , Jammu. The N.S.S unit has proved its mettle through the variety of social activities in and around the Campus . One unit of N.C.C is also functioning in the college and our N.C.C Cadets had made it to the R.D Prade at Delhi representing the state at national level. Culturual programme , debates , seminars , G.K tests , Quiz competition and Essay competition are organized from time to time for the better intellectual improvement of the students.
